Research Areas

  1. Development of microwave characterization techniques for bulk, thin film and powder samples of ferroelectrics, ultra low loss dielectrics, superconductors, magnetic materials and conductors. Microwave measurement techniques for fabricated devices on thin films by on wafer probing techniques.
  2.  Structure – property correlations in Ferroelectric and dielectric materials & Magnetic oxide (bulk and thin films). Co-substitution and Film Processing Conditions as a means of tailoring it.
  3. Material synthesis for application development and characterization. Ceramic route, Microwave processing, Wet chemical synthesis and Thin film deposition by RF sputtering, PLD and Sol-gel process. Novel process through Laser Induced Crystallization to lower crystallization temperature of  ferroelectric thin films to make them compatible with polymers and nano Electronics.
  4.  Tunable Microwave Device development using ferroelectric thin films. Now progressing to do it with magnetoelectric multilayers.  From starting raw materials Powder to final Device, the work is done in house. Sequence is the following: Calcination of reagents to form product powder- Sintering of the formed powder to make Sputtering or PLD Targets- Thin films by Sputtering or PLD- Fabrication of transmission line based test structures on the thin films- On wafer probing of the fabricated thin film test structure by On Wafer Probing using Probe Station and Vector Network Analyzer- Extraction of material material parameters by deembedding techniques- Use the extracted film characteristics in designing tunable microwave devices using Softwares like ADS- Make photomask as per the optimized design- Fabricate the Device as per the design on the film- Measure the fabricated device by on wafer probing – Device parameter extraction by de-embedding techniques. Only packaging is remaining. It will be attempted once the devices cross the developmental stage.
  5.  Research in materials for microwave applications (bulk and thin film, Films by RF sputtering or PLD), studying the Physics of these materials, processes and phenomena with students registered for Ph.D in Physics. The tunable microwave device design, their fabrication and measurements are pursued by students who do 1 year project as part of the M.Tech in IC Technology program and by Ph.D students registered under Electronics stream.

Other areas of interest: 

Study of liquids in the microwave frequency range. Comparing microwave data with results simulated using Gaussian and thereby arrive at molecular configurations in liquids. Microwave Dielectric Resonators, Application of low loss materials in microwave windows in Nuclear Fusion systems, Microwave Processing of Materials, Co-substitution to achieve novel properties in oxide ceramics, Magnetoelectric multilayers, Microwave device design including that of special antennas that uses the materials developed, Devices that uses LTCC process, Gel casting process for shaping solid microwave devices, High temperature piezoelectrics, Ferroelectrics for energy storage applications, Microwave absorbers with novel materials like Graphene and CNT, properties of Nanoscale Materials (ferroelectrics, metals & graphene) in the microwave range as well as Ferroelectrics in THz and non linear optics.
